Given the possible advent of disease, prevention is essential, but so is detection to reach a diagnosis and begin the appropriate treatment as early as possible. 

The “Research Update” section offers the keys to early detection of oral cancer. In 2015, 6,670 new cases of the disease were diagnosed in Spain. This article explains what the risk factors are and highlights the importance of prevention, as well as early diagnosis and subsequent treatment. 

Before beginning therapy, patients should always be examined so as to rule out any oral pathology from which they may be suffering. In the “DENTAID Solutions” section we detail which steps must be taken to carry out proper oral care in patients undergoing radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Peri-implantitis is an infectious disease that affects the soft and hard supporting tissues surrounding dental implants. The development of antibacterial strategies can be key to its prevention. The “Study” section focuses on antibacterial prevention in patients with titanium implants. 

Smoking has a negative impact on oral health and is a high risk factor in the occurrence of oral cancer. “The voice of SEPA” includes the “Smoking cessation and oral health” report, prepared by the Working Group of the Spanish Society of Periodontology and Osseointegration (SEPA) and the National Committee for the Prevention of Smoking (CNPT), which highlights the importance of the role of oral health professionals in the prevention and cessation of smoking. 

In the “Speaking with...” section, Raúl G. Caffesse, a doctor in Dentistry from the University of Buenos Aires and a world expert in the field of periodontology, offers an interesting interview in which he discusses, among other topics, his participation in a recent epidemiological study on peri-implant disease in Spain. 

In a clinical case, “The voice of SECIB” explains the steps to be taken in the surgical treatment of oro-sinusal communications.
