PERIO·AID® BIOADHESIVE GEL IMPROVES HEALING AND RESTORATIVE EFFICACY AFTER ORAL SURGERY

A clinical trial has shown the regenerative properties of PERIO·AID® Bioadhesive gel after surgical removal of two third molars.

Evaluation* of the healing and restorative efficacy of a new bioadhesive gel for post-surgical application in the oral cavity. CRO Barcelona, 2018. *Dentist-controlled crossover study

The most invasive interventions of the oral cavity, including extractions and oral, periodontal and/or implant surgery, involve damage to the gums and to the oral mucosa. After these procedures, it is important to repair the damaged tissues as quickly as possible, preventing the build-up of bacteria that could increase the risk of infection in the treated area, and speeding up the healing process and ensuing post-surgical recovery.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

In a single-blind, crossover, randomised, single-centre, controlled clinical trial involving 20 healthy volunteers who had both lower third molars sequentially removed surgically.

The duration of the experiment was 14 days for each subject and the gel was applied to only one of the surgical areas for seven days to subsequently evaluate its healing efficacy.

The study gel was DENTAID laboratories’ PERIO·AID® Bioadhesive gel (chlorhexidine 0.20%, hyaluronic acid 0.20% and panthenol 5%). The product was applied three times a day, after meals, directly to the area operated on.

All the participants in the study were examined visually upon removing the sutures, by the surgeon who performed the extractions and who did not know to which area the gel had been applied. The Landry et al. 1988 healing index was used, which rates the degree of healing from 1 to 5, considering 1 the poorest degree of healing and 5 an excellent degree of healing.

RESULTS

The graph shows the mean healing score on a scale of 1 to 5 (1-very poor; 5-excellent) for both groups:

The evaluations were, on average, higher for the gel group (3.85) than for the control group (3.40) after one week, with a difference of 0.45 points. This difference is statistically significant with a p-value of 0.024 (p <0.05).

It was also observed that the control group had more patients (compared to the gel group) in the very poor, poor or regular healing categories, while the gel group included more patients in the good or very good healing categories.

CONCLUSION

The use of PERIO·AID® Bioadhesive Gel after the extraction of lower third molars shows a statistically significant improvement in the healing and repairing of the treated area.
