Why is it important to use mouthwash containing CPC?

The mouth is one of the main routes of entry for viruses and bacteria that can cause oral and systemic diseases1.

At this moment in time, it is especially important to pay close attention to our mouths, since they also represent a place of transmission (through saliva) of many viruses, including SARS-CoV-2.

Currently there are clinical and in vitro studies that have shown that Cetylpyridinium Chloride (CPC), a daily-use oral antiseptic and a component in some mouthwashes, reduces the infectivity of SARS-CoV-23-7.

A study carried out by IRSICaixa researchers, in collaboration with scientists from the DENTAID Research Center, shows that CPC can reduce the infectious capacity of SARS-CoV-2 by about 1000 times in studies carried out on cells in the laboratory. CPC would disrupt the virus’ membrane, thereby thwarting the S protein’s ability to function and SARS-CoV-2’s ability to infect7.

Protecting ourselves daily is essential to minimise the risk of contagion. Just as we wash our hands and wear a mask to protect our mouth on the outside, it is important not to forget to protect our mouths on the inside as well.

Therefore, in addition to toothbrushing, the use of CPC mouthwash is important as a form of protection.  It is advisable to rinse and gargle for 30 seconds, since the virus can replicate in the pharynx area.

There is no doubt that oral health and general health are closely linked. Keep protecting your mouth now more than ever with products containing CPC.
