The research center is consolidating its role as a key hub for the future of oral health knowledge and disease prevention.
Leading figures in dentistry and periodontology gathered last Friday in Barcelona to learn about Dentaid’s global research efforts.
Barcelona, July 1st 2025: The Spanish oral health company Dentaid has opened the doors of its Dentaid Research Center, the most significant private oral health research center in Europe. The event, focused on promoting science and research, welcomed more than 60 renowned international researchers in the fields of dentistry and periodontology, representing leading universities and oral health research centers from around the world.
Under the theme “Opening Doors to Scientific Collaboration,” Dentaid Research Center’s Head of R&D+i, Joan Gispert, led the event, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between industry and academia. “Opening the doors of our home to the international scientific and medical community has given us a unique opportunity to explore synergies with the world’s leading oral health experts, share our main research lines, create a space for idea exchange, and continue co-creating knowledge with those who share our commitment to people’s health,” said Gispert.
The Dentaid Research Center is a benchmark in innovation, specializing in microbiology, pharmaceutics, and engineering. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the center focuses on understanding histological and physiological changes in the mouth, a vital step in identifying new therapeutic targets to improve both oral and systemic health. The research also aims to support natural aging processes and address prevalent conditions such as gum inflammation, peri-implant diseases, and oral conditions linked to cardiovascular, metabolic, and respiratory diseases.
The center is organized into four main areas: Oral biofilm microbiology research, development of pharmaceutical and physical technologies, formulation of scientifically validated oral health solutions (e.g., toothpaste and mouthwashes tailored to specific needs) and scientific knowledge generation, both in-house and in collaboration with universities, societies, and professionals.
This comprehensive approach ensures every scientific discovery can be translated into practical and effective solutions for people’s oral health needs.
During the visit, attendees explored these areas and learned how over 50 multidisciplinary professionals, including chemists, biologists, dentists, and engineers, work together to advance oral health knowledge.
Dr. Alejandra Chaparro, Director of Research at the University of the Andes (Chile), praised the center’s ability to apply knowledge to everyday clinical practice: “The most enriching part of this visit was witnessing firsthand how scientific knowledge is translated into daily clinical practice. The Dentaid Research Center is a specialized hub, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and a highly qualified team. The work done here clearly shows why they’re leaders in the sector, as well as the company’s strong commitment to research, innovation, and the development of safe, effective, and innovative oral health solutions.”
Dr. David Herrera, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the Complutense University of Madrid, highlighted the need for multidisciplinary collaboration to overcome current research challenges: “We’ve made significant progress in recent years, but key challenges remain—such as effectively translating scientific knowledge into clinical practice and increasing multidisciplinary collaboration. In this context, centers like the Dentaid Research Center play a crucial role in bringing science closer to professionals and patients while promoting applied research aligned with real professional needs."
The event also encouraged dialogue about the future of oral health research and concluded with a networking dinner, providing an ideal environment for idea exchange.
Dr. Iain Chapple, Professor of Periodontology and Director of Research at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, University of Birmingham (UK), stressed the importance of these interactions for aligning research with clinical needs: “The connection between dental professionals and oral healthcare companies is essential to move forward together. Events like this facilitate idea exchange, help align research with the real needs of clinical practice, and open the door to collaborations that could transform how we understand and care for oral health.”
As Dentaid celebrates its 45th anniversary, it reaffirms its commitment to improving global oral health. Through its focus on innovation and ongoing education, Dentaid not only develops safe and effective products but also promotes awareness and knowledge among professionals and the public alike. Each year, more than 6,000 oral health professionals receive training through the Aula Dentaid platform.
